Reclaim it back!

I recently recieved this comment from SIN on the above picture when I posted it on my myspace page:

"Hijack of space in Cuba. I invite all people who do paste ups to add to this. Im on a campaign of taking back the spaces taken by posters ( not ones by phantom, they go over theirs every week).I'll Hijack the space, put one of my names there and people can add or go over"

Band poster placement has its place and may not be as evil as some corporate git with a huge budget for advertising but why do they choose to put it over Street Art. Street artists do it for the love, not to get people through the door to drink their watered down beer! Sin has started a good thing here. Let's reclaim the spaces once used and loved by Street Artists and show them that their posters can't stop us! MWAHAHAHA

The year that was.

Xmas has come and gone and the year is slowly coming to an end. Not much has happened over he xmas period except for the usual school holiday influx of whack tags and scribbles all over the place.

I intended to do some more interview posts but this time of year has seen everyone leave town for a few weeks so will go right on back to them in the new year.

Meanwhile, heres some slaps I've found around town. Not many but it's a start ;-P

Letters to the .......

The first time I saw 'Editor' was a well placed tag down Left Bank. Since then I've watched him paint numerous times, snapping flicks as I go, and even painted (well, stencilled) along side him for last weekends Buff Mish. When I found out that he's from South Africa, I was interested in what he thought of New Zealand Graffiti in comparison. So, through the magic of email I managed to get in contact with him and ask a few questions..
EDITOR Q&A

WWS:

Tell us what you write and how long you've been in the graf game?

EDITOR:

I write EDITOR, used to shift and change through names but eventually got into the letters. I cant remember when I started, but I have some photos from when i was 13 where I did a piece or two. Only got into it properly later, when I was 15 I think.

WWS:

We've seen a few different writers names around your pieces, who do you paint with most often?

More noticeably is the WK? Most established writers are part of a 'crew' Is WK? the crew you rep?....and what does it stand for?

EDITOR:

Well...in Welly I mostly paint with Cast and Drypnz, and sometimes Ikon and my man Preo. but I enjoy painting outside of Welly the most, like in Christchurch with the DTR boys and Auckland with the GBAK crew.

WK? is a crew based in South Africa, pretty big crew actually, most members reside in England now. it stands for WhatKind?...saffa thing i guess.

(Saffa is a term used for South African immigrants taking over a country )

WWS:

How does Wellington/New Zealand Graffiti compare to Graffiti in South Africa? Are there any noticeable differences in style/technique etc?

EDITOR:

Over here the first thing I noticed was the "straights" style, which is actually pretty cool, we didn't have a distinct tagging style back home, from when I started in a small town outside the city everyone kinda took on a similar style, cause we didn't have Internet and shit for flicks, like kids nowadays that can just copy shit straight off the net. Alot of cats in South Africa have their own style while others just nibble from the main group of writers around. Over here it seems to be a "cool" thing to do amongst kids, which I find rather sad...its not about that.

WWS:

Finally, any plans for the future? Piecing the Beehive? World domination? Ha ha

EDITOR:

Future plans, move away from Wellington for a while. take a break I guess...I reckon there is way more to life.

~Cheers Editor~

Buff Mish...

Since I was too busy putting up my stencil I didn't really have time to get any action shots. I Thank the Graf gods that I finished in time to get some of the finished products though.

Inevitably we knew that all the fresh stuff would get capped within days or even hours, and their we're a few too many pessimists that chose to remind us of that. Obviously they completely missed the point of the whole day!!!!

Anyway, we had fun for 5 or so hours.

Bloggers Delight

I've gotta send some love over to TheKidsPresent! for these snaps.

Ikon and Stray had hit these derelict walls over the weekend but everytime I went by, a car would be conveniently parked right in the middle of the piece. Goddamn it!

Bloggers Delight.

Thanks Kid.

(I've got alot of new stuff to post, but couldn't resist posting these first)

(In.the.street) ART

I thought this was worth a mention...

Discovered a huge pile of inorganic rubbish down Stout Street off Lambton Quay today. We thought it was for a T.V advert or an 80's remake video of 'Wild Boys' by Duran Duran lmao but discovered it was part of a collective art installation called the One Day Sculpture series. This pile of junk was created by Ivan and Heather Morison and dubbed 'Journ Des Barricades'

...I hear that he next Sculpture will be appearing somewhere in Dunedin next Sunday 21.

...And from the other side

Post

I had a brief conversation with THE KID while the GREAT BUFF MISH was going down about keeping on top of this blog business. Its so easy, and I've done this so many times before where your mind is racing with ideas while your bored at work, you get home, sit down and relax and realise you can't be arsed laying down the idea that you got so excited about. I'm not sure how it works idea-wise for The Kid but this site is dependant on the writers/artists getting up around town. So, no new graf, no new posts! Of course their is ALOT of tagging, and pretty much all of it is really REALLY ugly unless they've got a mean hand style like COVET or HEIST but I've chosen not to post any of it. So in reality I'm not left with much to work with.

Now that my ranting is over, There is alot to report on, the official opening of BoomBox, LeftBank buff mission, pics of the finished pieces after the buff and a WgtnWallStreet debut of BEWARE...... but I'll save those for another day ;-P

Its on now!

Just a quick heads up on whats going down around the way.....

Saturday 13 December is gonna be a pretty full on day for a few people, and most probably followed by a leave-me-alone-im-hungover Sunday!

Everyones favourite side street clothing space BOOMBOX are having their official opening! Check the flyer for more info. It's gonna be mean...

BUFF MISH

Now, Leftbank.co.nz have organised a (semi) buff down leftbank alley. The alley hasn't been looking the best (to put it nicely) over the last few months with rumours that a few writers have chosen not to paint there because of the disrespect the amateurs are all to willing to show. It's sad because Leftbank used to be the hub of Wellington Street Art..... Ah well.

If all goes to plan we should be painting the buff by 10am-ish and getting up about 11.30-ish. Come down and check what the haps is. Anyone with beef should leave it all at home. We're trying to show that graf can be positive and not just considered an act of vandalism.

Lazy

Man, I've had the motivation of an obese snail lately. I've only managed to barely organise something to paint on Saturday's Buff Mish and get a few photos here and there. In an effort to justify my procrastination, there's a few things going on over the weekend that I'm waiting to post on.
Watch this space

Meanwhile.
The BMD made an appearance...

Not entirely related but.....

I'm probably lightyears behind but while on my usual addiction-fuelling rampage through The French art shop and Gordon Harris I discovered a book called Pictoplasma. Now i've been a fan of street art characters forever but holding a book dedicated to contempory character designs, in all shapes and sizes, cuteness and colours was a dream come true. If I wasn't such a strong believer in karma I would have walked my excited self out those doors with the book up my shirt!

Thinking that I knew a thing or two about books and art and books about art I mentioned this character bible to a good friend last night. I got a blase' response from him sayin 'Oh yeh, Ive got the first one'....again If I didn't believe in karma ;-P...haha I managed to coax him into letting me borrow it.

But for all of those who can't get your hands on the book, they have a HUGE online archive of submitted character designs which you can check out HERE

Thats Dooppe!

Went on a mission to catch Drypnz's latest mural up by Massey University. I didn't expect it to be as big as it is but knew it would be dope as hell!........He just keeps getting better and better!

If THE BUFF are a writers worst enemy then parked Cars must be a graf photographer's recurring nightmare. I saw Dryp on my way back into town. He was going up to get some photo's too. I mentioned that there was a (fucking) car parked in front of it so he wouldn't be able to get a full shot hence the side angle shots above. Where's Superman when you need him to move heavy objects out of the way huh ??!?! lol
