I was supposed to report on an Auckland event called Art Week which is curated by the lovely Cleo Barnett, the wonder lady who also brings us First Thursdays and the recent group show Dirty 13. Forgetting that blogger uses american date stamp when scheduling upcoming posts I foolishly set the post date for 12 December instead of 12 October! So sadly I have missed out on getting the word out there for Spencer Harrington AKA Randoms' show.

But never fear. Regan Tamanui AKA HA HA, a prolific stencil artist straight outta the Tron but based in Melbourne has a show in Auckland opening tomorrow night.

This set of photos sparked a mini debate on Facebook about the intentions of the police and / or the artist involved so here's the background behind it.

'' It's a campaign to recruit more cops. BUT! They're trying to appeal to a less... Um... 20yr old male with an ego/power trip mentality, type. The woman cop in the stencil has dedicated her adult life to busting paedophiles and violent assholes who abuse kids in all sorts of horrible ways ''

I learnt while chatting to the guys running the show that the Detective Kylie Schaare(pictured at bottom of post) had studied Law at University with the intention of becoming a Detective in the police force. As stated above by Otis Frizzell himself she has dedicated her life to busting child abusers and pedophiles.

This is 1 stencil of 4. 1 in Wellington and Auckland and 2 in Christchurch. Each stencil representing a Police Officer / Detective that have done something positive in the community. I will source photos of the 3 other stencils and post them.

I will remain passive with this one as I don't want another debate about who or what is right when it comes to Street Art and the involvement of the Police with it. I will let the quality of the art work speak for itself.

Red Bull Wreckers Yard

16 of the best graff artists from New Zealand have been hand-picked to display their artistic flair, whilst spraying against the clock. In the Wellington and Auckland qualifier, eight graff artists will be provided with just a blank canvas and cans of spray paint to do their thing.

Each round will be based on a theme, given to the competitors a minute out from the start of the round. Some examples of themes could include greed, nature or fear. The artists will then have to spray according to the theme.

The winners from each New Zealand qualifier will battle it out for the podium with the best from across the ditch at the Red Bull Wreckers Yard Trans Tasman Final, held on 25 June at the Evelyn Hotel in Melbourne.

The Wellington qualifier features: BMD, Drypnz, Editor, GHSTIE, Juse 1, Kerb, Kiran X and Yelz,

The Auckland qualifier features: Cinzah, Cracked Ink, Enu, Gasp, Liam Moore, One Kame, Peepshow and Stray

Bodega Bar, Wellington, Saturday 21st May, 7pm, Free Entry.

So some info on an exhibition & competition to take place in September this year in the South Island’s sunny Nelson

There are 3 aspects to the event;

The first features over 70 works by the worlds leading street art protagonists, Banksy, Faile, Micallef, Swoon and many more.

The second aspect is the Oi You! art competition with two sections, youth 9 to 13 years, & open. More info about registering here

The third is a brand new Cut Collective exhibiton created specifically for the event .

Oi You! is shaping up to be a major feature on the street art horizon within NZ. It’s big, ambitious and for the first time in this country we will get an opportunity to see NZ street art contextualiszed in a world sense.

Keep your ears open for more info as the weeks go by.
